Medical image data can be obtained from a variety of different modalities such as mammography, Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and are used for diagnostic purposes, guiding medical interventions such as surgical planning and radiotherapy, and/or for research purposes. Medical image analysis involves the study of 2D and 3D image data sets obtained from the human body using the above modalities. The main feature of medical image processing which has made it a significantly advantageous area is its ability to provide an in-depth but non-invasive investigation of the internal human anatomy.
