Are we alone in the universe? Since the time of mankind, we have been asking ourselves where we come from and where we are going and whether we are alone in the universe. According to Christine Moissl-Eichinger, Professor for Interactive Microbiome Research at the Medical University of Graz, we are never alone with ourselves. Billions of microorganisms populate our body and the earth. These microbes are the oldest existing and most common life form on our planet and follow us at every turn – even into space.
This is not unproblematic, as there is a separate law that prescribes “planetary protection”: Terrestrial life forms must not reach other planets and contaminate them. But how do you keep space shuttles and astronauts free of microorganisms – both on their way to Mars and back again? Are we otherwise threatened by an alien invasion? Christine Moissl-Eichinger answers these and other fascinating questions in the TEDx video
