Additive manufacturing, or simply „3D-printing” conquered the world of hobbyists by storm during the past 15 years. By utilizing “off-the-shelf-parts” combined with clever assembly techniques, manufacturers managed to introduce affordable machines to the market which introduced millions of people to the hobby around the world.
In recent years the machines have been getting smarter and more reliable with only minimal user interaction required to produce high-quality models. The seamless integration of free, user-based 3D-model repositories into the 3D-printing pipeline streamlined the process of getting from a model to a finished product in your hand. This allows people with no experience in CAD-design and/or 3D-printing to access a seemingly never-ending world ranging from toys and gadgets to furniture, replacement parts, teaching material for life sciences and much more.
Combining this with cheap and widely available consumables (e.g. plastic filaments), 3D-printing now is more than just a hobby. Now it is a tool just like a screwdriver or a hammer which can find a place in any home.
